Heavy rains lashed parts of Gujarat, disrupting normal life and causing flooding in low-lying areas in Surat, Banaskantha, and Anand districts, with Palsana taluka in Surat recording 209 mm rainfall in a day until Saturday morning, according to officials.
A team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) deployed by the district administration shifted as many as 380 people to safer places from rainfall-hit villages in Anand district after flooding in some villages of Borsad taluka caused by heavy rains on Thursday, they said.
Parts of south Gujarat and Banaskantha in north Gujarat received heavy rainfall in the 24-hour period ending at 6 a.m. Saturday, caused flooding in many areas.
Rainfall also had an impact on Surat. The district’s highest rainfall total was 209 mm, recorded in Palsana taluka. According to the government’s State Emergency Operation Centre, other talukas in Surat district that received more than 100 mm of rain during this period included Bardoli (125 mm), Olpad (118 mm), and Choryasi (117 mm) (SEOC). Apart from the districts of Navsari, Tapi, and Valsad in south Gujarat, Banaskantha in north Gujarat received heavy rainfall, particularly in the talukas of Deodar (190 mm), Deesa (120 mm), and Amirgadh (120 mm), according to SEOC data.
Several shops in Deesa town’s low-lying areas were flooded, disrupting normal life. Roads were inundated, and underpasses were dangerously filled with water, making traffic movement difficult. Surat’s low-lying areas were similarly affected.
“Flooding in low-lying areas forced the relocation of 380 people from two villages in Borsad taluka.” Rains have stopped in the area and the water has receded, but 140 people have yet to return home,” said an Anand district administration disaster management official.
The NDRF team was also conducting a search for a body washed away in heavy rain in the district’s Sisva village, with no success as of yet, he said. According to the SEOC, 176 of Gujarat’s 251 talukas received showers, with 39 of them receiving more than 50 mm of rain in 24 hours until Saturday morning.
The Met department predicts light to moderate rainfall in several parts of Gujarat over the next five days, with heavy to very heavy rains in isolated areas of some districts in south and central Gujarat, as well as the Saurashtra-Kutch region, during this time.
