Fashion is a style statement. The way one dresses speaks a lot about the personality, the identity of the individual, his or her beliefs and choices. Dressing “season appropriate,” however, cannot be overlooked. Even if one cannot go wrong with a LBD (low black dress) for a formal evening, it might not work out for the winter. Likewise, a crisp chikankari suit is an elegant attire in hot summers but might look a wee bit out of place in monsoon.
Now that the rains are here, Vibes Of India speaks to Amdavad’s fashion pundits for their take on the perfect monsoon garb.
Ritika Sutaria, proprietor, Syrah Stylists:
Avoid white and pastels. Not only will mud and splashes show in a very prominent way, the dull weather can surely do with some bright colours to cheer up the mood. Keep your hemline short, wear water resistant footwear (Crocs are a good investment), avoid leather and heels. Wear clothes made of lighter and breathable fabrics like cotton and linen blends, which dry easily when wet. Avoid wearing denims as it takes forever to dry up.

We work with clients to suggest individual changes. For instance, those looking for grooming of appearance are advised on basis of their age, profession and personality.
In terms of seasonal wear, there are some thumb rules. For instance, swap salwars for tights and leggings during monsoon, wear flip-flops instead of the velvety pumps.

Wear huge prints and bright colours to wash away the monsoon blues. Opt for fabrics which dry easily such as cotton, mul, chiffon and nylon.
Rubber shoes are the best bet during rains. Unlike flip[-flops and loose slippers, they do not squirt back the dirt on clothes or feet. They are cheap, washable and comfortable. Avoid wearing heels at all cost!

Monsoon is a tricky weather. Keep your brolly and raincoat handy always. Switch to cottons and muls, which dry easily. Synthetics take a longer time to dry and if not crisply dried, there is a strange smell it emanates. Avoid see-through white tops and dresses which become all the more transparent when wet. In terms of footwear, opt for PVC footwear or Crocs. Experiment with bright colours and avoid body-hugging fits.

I like to go full INDIE during this Monsoon. Maybe pair ripped jeans with block print shirts and accessories with oxidised jewels. You can also go with khaadi pants and kurta, a small bindi, kohl eyes and brown on the lips – A classic 90’s vibe.

Add vibrant colours like red, orange, yellow and olive green to your clothing. Brightly coloured blouses or shirts go well with simple, slim-fitting slacks. Avoid donning light-coloured clothing, particularly bottoms. Light colours also become transparent when they are moist. So, to be on the safe side, dress in dark or striking colours.
Think about wearing a coordinated outfit with a splash of neon. This season, being makeup-free is the way to go. It’s crucial to wear little to no makeup during the monsoon because when it pours down, the make-up does get smudgy. Additionally, makeup and humidity are not the best of friends.
