SSG hospital Vadodara treated four patients with high-dose chemotherapy followed by a bone marrow transplant by the Oncology department. Compared to private hospitals, the operation fee in SSG hospitals was minimal.
Dr Meet Kumar, a pass out of MP Shah Medical College Jamnagar and resident of Vadodara, is the visiting oncologist in the hospital. He said, “For the first time, an autologous stem cell/bone marrow transplant of four patients has taken place. The treatment cost for the bone marrow transplant is expensive. However, we charge patients with minimal amount. After 15 days, we shall discharge the two patients of the transplant. The other two are also recovering soon.”
The four patients include:
- 26-year-old boy male suffering from chemotherapy-refractory Hodgkin lymphoma,
- A 26-year-old female with acute leukaemia,
- An 11-year-old boy suffering from acute leukaemia and
- 71-year-old female suffering from multiple myeloma was the most tricky patient.
Further, Dr Meet informed that he aims to collaborate with Dr Anil Goel, Head of the Radiation Oncology Department and Dr Ranjan Aiyar, Superintendent of SSG hospital. Together, they wish to start a course in advanced treatment, unavailable in State Government Medical Colleges of Gujarat.
He also joined the Oncology Department of SSG Hospital under the CM Setu Scheme to provide Gujarat with his services. He explained, “We started the bone marrow transplant services with the help of Doctors and nursing staff of Radiation Oncology department and BMT unit with 24*7 strict observation. We were able to discharge the first bone marrow transplant patient in 15 days. We have also successfully treated four patients to date and wish to extend the services to everyone.”
Dr Anil Goel, Head of the Oncology department, said, “Organising these advanced services with limited workforce and resources were some of the challenges we faced initially. However, with Dr Ranjan Aiyer, we managed to overcome the hurdles.”
