A magistrate’s court in Mumbai yesterday granted bail to renowned choreographer Ganesh Acharya in the sexual harassment case, which was filed against him in 2020. The woman who filed the case claims to have worked as an assistant choreographer for Acharya.
In the FIR, the complainant has said that Acharya forced her to watch pornographic videos when she went to his office in 2009 and 2010. She has also said that other women too have suffered similar things at his hands. Furthermore, she has also accused the Bollywood artist of ganging up with two others and beating her up during a function of the Indian Film and Television Choreographers Association in Andheri on January 26, 2020.
Mumbai police booked Acharya in the case in April this year and charged him with sexual harassment and voyeurism. The police registered the case under sections 354-A (sexual harassment), 354-C (watching, or capturing the image of a woman engaging in a private act), 354-D (stalking), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the IPC.
This is the first time that Acharya has been arrested in the case and has now been granted bail. The choreographer has denied all the allegations.
Ganesh Acharya, 51, started his career as an assistant to choreographer Kamalji in the early 1990s. He then started out on his own in 1992 but gained widespread fame and recognition for his work on the song Badi Mushkil from Lajja in 2001.
