“Act Local. Think Global,” Says Duggubati

For actor Rana Duggubati, local stories pitched on a unique peg are what makes success. “And if done correctly, India’s own stories have the potential to go global,” he adds.

The actor was speaking at a press conference over the weekend. Duggubati, best known for his stellar performance in epics such as Baahubali and Nene Raju Nene Mantri, added that recreation of Netflix’s Money Heist, too, could rake in the moolah. “But the local element must be woven in. The audience must relate to the project to make it impactful,” as he put it.

Mincing no words, he elaborated how India is a land of stories with the greatest banks of mythologies. “The scale of our own epics would put to shame any Game of Thrones. However, if catering to the global audience, we must not lose our own identity. We have to keep the local alive. Indian stories are unique to a foreign reach,” as he put it.

The discussion was part of a panel discussion celebrating two years of a streaming platform Duggubati is associated with. The gathering included filmmakers Hansal Mehta, Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, Nikkhil Advani, and Applause Entertainment CEO Sameer Nair and Danish Khan.

He celebrated OTT as the revival of a meaningful viewing experience, stating, “long-form of writing is here to stay, courtesy this premium moment of the television.” The 37-year-old actor will soon be seen in Sony LIV’s “Case Files of Hemanth Rao” and Netflix’s “Rana Naidu.”
