A special court in Ahmedabad has agreed to modify the bail condition for Fulabhai Vyas, who is among the 84 accused in the 2002 Naroda Gam massacre case. With the revision of conditions, Vyas will be able to leave Gujarat in order to participate in a religious event to be held in Haridwar, Uttarakhand. Following his arrest and release in 2008, the court had imposed bail conditions that did not allow Vyas to leave the state of Gujarat.
In his plea to get the bail conditions revised, Vyas has explained that he is a lifetime member of Gayatri Parivar and was required to participate in religious events all around India several times a year.
The All World Gayatri Pariwar is a Hindu-based reform movement based in Haridwar with a large following, especially in North India.
The special prosecutor refrained from raising any objections and asked the court to make the decision. Then, the designated SIT judge Shubhada Baxi suspended the bail condition without raising any objections. As such, Vyas will be able to travel out of Gujarat from July 1.
Naroda Gam massacre is one of the nine major communal riots cases that occurred in 2002. Eleven people belonging to the minority community were killed in these riots during a bandh call made to protest the Godhra train burning incident of February 27, 2002.
