Google CEO and Padma Bhushan recipient Sundar Pichai is celebrating his 50th birthday today.
Here’s a timeline of his career from IIT, Kharagpur, to becoming the CEO of the search giant Google.
Completing his B.tech in metallurgic engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology IIT and M.S. in material science from Stanford University, he joined Google in 2004. He was working as the project head of various management and innovation efforts for a series of Google’s client software. He later overlooked the development of Gmail and Google Maps and played a massive part in Google Drive.
In 2015 he was selected to become the next CEO of Google by Larry Page, previously appointed product chief CEO. In 2019, he became the CEO of Alphabet Inc., Google’s parent company formed in 2015.
Before working at Google, he worked as an engineer at manufacturer Applied Material and later in management consulting at McKinsey & Company.
Pichai married Anjali Pichai, a software engineer, who was his classmate at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur. They have two children, Kavya Pichai & Kiran Pichai, and live in their house in the Los Altos hills.
Pichai has stated his interests in sports like football and cricket. In a seminar at Delhi University in 2015, addressing the students, he expressed his fondness for cricket and its batting brilliants, Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar. Furthermore, he said that, like most Indians, he wanted to be a cricketer.
Coming from a humble background in India, he now earns millions annually. Between 2015 and 2020, he made about $1 billion, including bonuses and grants.
Last year in November 2021, Alphabet briefly hit a US $2 trillion market cap. It momentarily became the third US-based company to join the $2 trillion club
