Just the idea of sologamy and spending every second of life in love with yourself makes me feel happy. It showcases that you are content and no one else but you are responsible for your happiness. I believe that marrying yourself is a journey of learning, passion, and acceptance of oneself to give that same love to others.
Knowing and loving yourself as an individual allows you to respect and value another on the path of love and acceptance. It is true not only for romantic relationships but also for family, friends, and the rest of the world. You are the one constant in your life in sickness and health, and building yourself up from within helps create space to love and be loved. All of this is my definition of Sologamy.
Deeper Insight Into Self-Love
Sologamy, also known as self-marriage or autogamy, is the act of marrying oneself in a public ceremony. The symbolic wedding is used by many to express their self-love and independence, even though such a marriage has no legal sanction or significance.
It all started with Linda Baker, a dental hygienist from the United States who married herself in 1993.
However, India saw its first Sologamy in 2022. Kshama Bindu, a Vadodara resident, married herself with all the wedding rituals of Mehendi and Haldi. She identifies as a bisexual person. Kshama did her graduation in Sociology and is currently working as Senior Recruitment Officer in a private company. Both her parents are engineers.
“Self-marriage is a commitment to be there for yourself and unconditional love for oneself. It is also an act of self-acceptance. People marry someone they love. I love myself and hence, this wedding,” explained Kshama, the first Indian woman to marry herself.
However, some people say there is a downside to it. Some people think that self-marriage gives you a nun status. However, we can easily disregard it because being a nun entails much more than staying unmarried. Many people also believe that having a partner after marrying yourself is polygamy, illegal in many cases. A Brazilian model named Cris Galera declared that she ended her single marriage only after 90 days because she had fallen in love with someone else.
In Canada, Marry Yourself provides consulting and self-wedding photography. Moreover, IMarriedMe.com in San Francisco offers Sologamy ceremony kits with a wedding band and vows. Cerca Travel in Kyoto also offers a two-day self-wedding package.
