The Mehsana Session court has banned Vadgam MLA Jignesh Mevani from traveling outside Gujarat. Recently, the court convicted and sentenced the Vadgam MLA and 10 others to three months in jail for a July 2016 case. However, he has filed an appeal in front of Mehsana Session court and challenged the order.
On Friday, after the bail applications hearings, the court ordered Jignesh Mevani, Reshma Patel, Co-Convener of Rashtriya Dalit Adhikar Manch Subodh Parmar, and other convicts to not leave Gujarat. In addition to this, the court has counted another condition to the bail approval. Mevani and other convicts must not engage in any other offence or misuse the freedom court has given to them.
In 2016, Mevani, Gujarat’s independent MLA and fierce Dalit leader, organized a rally from Mehsana to Dhanera in Banaskantha one year of the Una Flogging Incident. Earlier, the Dalit community in Lavara, Banaskantha, was sick of the tortures and constant land encroachment for forty years. As the rally concluded, Mevani successfully removed the atrocious landlords and gave the possession back to the owner.
Regardless, the Mehsana cops lodged an FIR against Jignesh and others for not taking police permission. Jignesh Mevani claims that he is the first MLA in Gujarat to be sentenced for holding a rally without permission.
