A delegation from Pakistan is currently in New Delhi to hold talks regarding the water dispute between the two countries. The team, led by Pakistan’s Commissioner for Indus Water Syed Muhammad Mehr Ali Shah, was welcomed by Rajbir Singh, director of Water Resource New Delhi, at the Attari border. Singh assured that the delegation was provided with adequate security for their journey from Attari border to the Amritsar airport.
The talks between the two countries pertain to the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) signed in 1960. Under this treaty, India and Pakistan share waters of six rivers in the Indus basin. It was decided that India will have complete rights over Sutlej, Beas and Ravi in the east and Pakistan has rights over the western rivers of Chenab, Jhelum and Indus.
In March this year, the two countries renewed their commitment to implement the treaty in its true spirit and hoped for the next meeting soon.
As such, the two countries meet annually to discuss Indus Waters Treaty, alternatively in Pakistan and India.
Other members of the delegation include Habib Ullah Bodla, Khalid Mehmood, Sahibzad Khan and Sarman Muneeb.
