In a historic move, the Mamata Banerjee Cabinet on Thursday decided that she would be the Chancellor of all state-run universities and not the Governor amid the standoff between the West Bengal Government and Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar over the appointment of vice-chancellors.
The relevant law will be amended by the State Government in the assembly to make the Chief Minister the Chancellor of state-run universities, replacing the Governor.
The Cabinet decision was announced by State Education Minister Bratya Basu after the meeting.
This has come in the backdrop of Dhankhar’s slugfest with the State Government with the Governor alleging that several Vice-Chancellors were recently appointed without the Raj Bhavan’s consent.
