Despite its dismal box office inflow all through the last decade, YRF has managed to stay afloat. The brand is associated with “good times at the theatres.” However, with 14 flops over 11 hits in the last 10 years, high hopes have been pinned on JayeshBhai to break the production house’s jinx.
Among its all-time highest grossers remain War, Ek Tha Tiger and the Dhoom series. “Bunty Aur Babli 2,” the last release settled with a box office collection of Rs 11.98 crores.
Even with the box office debacles, YRF has managed to rake in profits. Film analysts attribute this to the fact that YRF produces movies at a significant scale and goes solo. For instance, Dharma (Karan Johar’s production house) has partnered with Fox Star and with Viacom. The movies are funded, marketed, and distributed by Viacom while the ownership of Internet Protocol (IP) is shared between multiple entities. Most banners have adopted this divided-investments-for-greater-yield approach.
However, Yash Raj Films owns 100 per cent of the IP content produced in-house and just in case, the film fails at the box office, selling it to OTT platforms eventually helps to break even. Avenues like satellite rights, streaming rights and music rights sales, bring back the money invested.
The film is directed by debutant filmmaker Divyang Thakkar while Ranveer Singh plays the lead. The plot revolves around Singh’s character, the son of the village head who is under pressure from the family to produce a male heir. It also stars Ratna Pathak Shah and Shalini Pandey.
Friday, the ominous 13th, will now decide if JayeshBhai is able to break the spell or merely be a sigh of relief for the production house. It will be released nationwide across 2000 screens.
