Bringing much relief from the scorching sun, Ahmedabad and parts of Gujarat witnessed mild showers on Wednesday. The weatherman attributes this to western disturbances. However, farmers are worried about the potential damage that unseasonal rain entails, particularly in case of kesaria mangoes.
Moderate rain was also reported from some places in Saurashtra. A brief but intense dust storm preceded the showers late afternoon. According to the met department, unseasonal rain may occur in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Banaskantha, Patan, Mehsana, Vadodara, Bharuch, Surendranagar, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Porbandar, Junagadh, Amreli, Morbi, Dwarka, Botad and Kutch today. On Friday, Anand, Dahod, Mahisagar, Vadodara, Bharuch and Bhavnagar may receive light to moderate rain with thundershowers, besides wind gusts at 30 to 40 kmph.
However, the unseasonal rain has caused farmers to worry about premature crop spoilage. For the time being, new transactions have been stalled at the Rajkot market yard.
Directives have also been issued to protect horticulture crops from windy gusts while for farm produce and fodder, a safe storage has been advocated. In particular, there is threat to the kesaria mango farmers. Likewise, in Porbandar, apprehensions loom about the damage to moong and chawli harvest due to the prevalent cloudy conditions. In Sabarkantha, farmers are worried about weather playing spolisport for the wheat crop.
