The defending champions’ nightmare continued on Sunday as Liam Livingstone’s all-round performance enabled Punjab Kings win by 54 runs in IPL 2022 in Mumbai. This is the first time CSK have lost their first three matches in an IPL season.
CSK were behind the asking rate from the outset, as Ruturaj Gaikwad and Robin Uthappa failed to get the yellow brigade off to a solid start. The Ravindra Jadeja-led team got off to a bad start against Punjab Kings, losing four wickets in the powerplay. Rayudu, who scored 13 runs, was also dismissed after eight overs, leaving Chennai at 38 for five.
Livingstone, one of the most lethal T20 batsmen in the world, played up to his high price tag, slamming five fours and an equal number of sixes, putting the CSK bowlers on the back foot. With the bat, the England all-rounder put on a display, hitting a couple hundred-meter plus sixes off length deliveries. Even the heavy edges went for six, leaving the CSK bowlers perplexed till he was at the crease.
In only 8.4 overs, Livingstone and Shikhar Dhawan (33 off 24 balls) contributed 95 for the third wicket, implying that another 200-plus total was on the cards. Punjab had created the foundation by scoring 109 in the first 10 overs, which the latter batters were unable to capitalise on.
Earlier, Chennai Super Kings won the toss and opted to bowl against Punjab Kings in an Indian Premier League match on Sunday. While PBKS brought in pacer Vaibhav Arora in place of left-arm spinner Harpreet Brar, keeper-batter Jitesh Sharma replaced all-rounder Raj Angad Bawa. For CSK, Chris Jordan came in place of Tushar Deshpande.
