| Updated: March 19, 2022 13:02

Two days before the International Happiness Day, the United Nations released the World’s Happiness Report on Friday. Out of a total of 146 countries, India was ranked the as happiest country 136th on the happiness Index. However, Finland was ranked as the happiest country for the fifth consecutive time.

The report states Afghanistan as the unhappiest country and the other four countries in the bottom five-category include Lebanon, Zimbabwe, Rwanda and Botswana, respectively. Apart from Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Switzerland and the Netherlands are ranked top five happiest countries in the World’s Happiness Index.

Out of a total of 146 countries, in comparison to the last report of 2021, India has jumped three spots from 139th to 136th. India had ranked 144 in 2020 and 140 in 2019. However, India was ranked 133rd in 2018 and 122nd in 2017.

Russia and Ukraine – two nations at war are ranked 80 and 98 respectively. However, the recent report is based on the data compiled before February 24, the date on which Russia launched an invasion of its neighbour country – Ukraine.

The happiness index is a ranking of 146 countries, which was 150 before 2022, based on the factors such as a nation’s GDP, life expectancy, individual well-being among others. The countries are given a score on a scale of 0-10, taking into account the data of over three years. The report is annually issued by the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Solutions Network.
