Sardar Sarovar Narmada project participants owe Gujarat over Rs 7,000 crore, the Gujarat government told the state legislative assembly today.
Besides Gujarat, the three participating states are Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan.
Replying to a question raised by Congress MLA Niranjan Patel during Question Hour, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said that the state had not yet received Rs 7,225.10 crore from the three other participating states for capital share, operations and maintenance costs.
Madhya Pradesh’s dues stand at Rs 4,953.42 crore, followed by those of Maharashtra at Rs 1,715.67 crore and Rs 556.01 crore of Rajasthan, the chief minister, who handles the Narmada portfolio, said in a written reply.
In the last two years, Maharashtra paid 38.16 crore, Rajasthan provided 12.41 crore, while Madhya Pradesh paid nothing, the Chief Minister said.
In October 2021 and January 2022, the state government made representations during meetings of the Narmada Control Authority to recover the dues from the three states, Patel said.
After Gujarat made a representation, a committee and a sub-group committee with representatives of all four participating states was constituted, Patel said.
The Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd has been sending formal reminders every month to different authorities of the three other states, to clear the dues.
