The past two years have seen a sharp rise in crime Gujarat, as came to the fore during question hour in the Assembly on Thursday. The numbers include casualties in murder, theft, loot, kidnapping, rapes, suicide, accidents, attempt to murder and rioting.
In response to questions raised by opposition MLAs, minister of state for home Harsh Sanghavi shared the figure of deaths that occurred in 2020 and 2021. The highest number of cases were:
Unnatural deaths (40,492).
Accidental deaths (25,334).
Suicidal deaths (15,146).
Deaths by murder (1,893).
In addition, data furnished in the Assembly noted 18,658 theft cases and 3,911 kidnappings in the last two years. Gujarat also recorded 61 incidents of gang rape and 3,796 rape cases in the last two years.
This means, on average, 20 suicides, five rapes, 25 thefts, five kidnappings, and two murders occurred every day in the state.
But the most alarming part is that 2,619 accused are yet to be arrested, out of which 200 are rape accused. Ahmedabad reported 16 gangrape and 729 rape cases. Surat came second with five gangrape and 508 rape cases. Meanwhile, Vadodara reported 183 rape cases and four gang rapes. The capital of Gujarat, Gandhinagar, reported 37 rape incidents in two years.
The Congress alleged that people are ending their lives for various reasons, but the insensitive government puts such cases under the head of accidental deaths. Congress leader Sukram Rathwa said statistics show that Gujarat reports more than five rape incidents every day, but the government continues to say that women are safe in the state. He also added that the accused are not brought to justice resulting in a rise in such cases.
