To bring uniformity in medical education in the state, the Gujarat Government is set to introduce the Medical University Of Gujarat bill in the state assembly. The bill proposes to bring 400-odd medical and allied colleges under one university, which will exclusively oversee the functioning of medical colleges.
The move will bring massive changes to medical education as the bill proposes that all MBBS, Dental, Physiotherapy, Ayurveda, Homoeopathy and Nursing colleges have a common syllabus, academic calendar, examination and most importantly, a uniform pattern of processes and assessment.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel was given a presentation of the draft of the upcoming bill. Irrespective of college, about 40,000 medical, paramedical and alternative medicine students will have a uniform education system.
The majority of large states in the country have a medical university. Suppose the proposed bill is ratified in the budget session of the Gujarat assembly. In that case, students who secure admission in the first year of 2022-23 academic year will be inducted into the new medical university.
The proposed medical university will follow the same procedure as the Gujarat Technological University (GTU). When GTU was formed in 2007, all technical education courses of various state-run university affiliation was shifted to GTU.
On the flip side, established state-run universities will lose some prestige, as medical colleges will shift to the proposed medical university. These universities will be left with their science, arts, and commerce streams only.
Paramedical courses at 16 private universities will remain outside the purview of this medical university.
