A total of 271 Indian students who were stuck in Ukraine in the wake of Russia’s invasion of the country on February 24 returned to India via Romania on Saturday.
Most of the students who reached Mumbai studied in western Ukraine, closer to the Romanian border. Maharashtra cabinet minister Anil Parab, Union Minister Piyush Goyal and Mumbai mayor Kishori Pednekar were present at the airport to welcome the returnees. Twenty-seven students from Kerala were among the returnees.
While her grandson Aditya still remains in Ukraine, Indubai Bhalerao, from Kandivali in Mumbai, came to receive her granddaughter at the airport. She stated how her family was worried about his return, and soon. Her son Harshad informed that his son was still stuck in the war-torn country, but had managed to reach a safe spot and was immediately helped by locals.
Another parent was delighted to meet her son after a nerve-wracking four-day ordeal. She said she very happy with the Indian government’s decision to bring students back. Her son said that he feels lucky to reach home safe; he had reached a safe spot but yet was in panic, as many of his friends were still stuck in Kyiv.
