The Supreme Court today said it would hear tomorrow a plea seeking cancellation of offline examination for classes X and XII to be conducted by CBSE and several other boards this year.
This petition was filed by a child rights activist and a student union from Odisha which sought an alternative assessment mechanism to the one introduced last year for admission to undergraduate courses.
The petition was cited for urgent listing on Tuesday before a bench headed by Justice A.M. Khanwilkar.
The counsel for the petitioners, Prashant Padmanabhan, informed the court that some states have conducted their examination offline while others have published their schedules.
The bench, also comprising Justices Dinesh Maheshwari and C T Ravikumar, granted Mr Padmanabhan the liberty to serve the advance copy of the plea to the standing counsel for concerned respondents, including the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). “We will list it tomorrow”, the bench said.
In the petition, child rights activist Anubha Shrivastava Sahai and the Students Union of Odisha have also made the Council For The Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), National Institute Of Open Schooling (NIOS), and University Grants Commission as parties in the matter.
On June 17 last year, the top court had approved the assessment schemes of the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) and the Central Board of Secondary Education which had adopted the 30:30:40 formula for evaluation of marks for XII standards students based on results of class X, XI and XII respectively.
The Court also provided for students to take improvement examinations. It asked universities to arrange their admission schedule in line with the arrangement planned by the CBSE and CISCE.
For the present school year, the CBSE & CISCE divided the course of study into two terms. The first term examination was held online in December.
The CBSE has notified evaluation criteria in the event any of the two-term examinations were cancelled.
