In a first complete ODI win since 2014 at home and a first-ever ODI series whitewash win over West Indies, India beat West Indies by 96 runs in the third of tri-ODI series at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Friday.
Winning the toss, Rohit Sharma-led Indian side opted to bat first. Following a top-order collapse but a stable middle-order partnership, India managed to set a 266 runs target for the guests in 50 overs and losing 10 wickets. The top-performing batsmen were Shreyas Iyer with 80 runs off 111 balls, Rishabh Pant with 56 runs off 54 balls, Deepak Chahar with 38 runs off 38 balls and Washington Sundar with 33 runs off 34 balls, in respective order. Meanwhile, Jason Holder bagged a four-wicket haul and Alzarri Joseph, Hayden Walsh took two wickets each and Odean Smith, Fabian Allen sent back one batsman each to the pavilion.
The West Indian side, while chasing the 266-runs target were bowled out for 169 runs in 37.1 overs with Odean Smith 36 (18), Nicholas Pooran 34 (39) and Alzarri Joseph 29 (56) being the top-scoring batsmen for the guest’s side. In the second innings, the Indian bowlers – Prasidh Krishna and Mohmmad Siraj took three wickets each followed by Deepak Chahar and Kuldeep Yadav, who bagged two dismissals each.
This helped India to win the third ODI match against West Indies and whitewashing the guests by a 3-0 series win. The player of the match award was won by Shreyas Iyer for his brilliant 80 runs knock off 111 balls and Prasidh Krishna was named the player of the series.
India and West Indies will now face each other in the first of a tri-T20I series on February 16, 2022 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
