India defeated West Indies in the second ODI of a tri-series by 44 runs and took a lead by 2-0, clinching the series at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The toss was won by the guests and they had opted to field.
The West Indies bowlers were successful in containing India to score 237 runs in 50 overs. With a loose performance by the top-order batsmen, India lost its opening batsmen and one-down before even posting 50 on the scoreboard. Opening batsmen Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant were caught after scoring five and 18 runs respectively. Followed by these wickets, Virat Kohli lost his wicket scoring 18 runs off 30 balls.
The Indian innings got stable with a 91 runs partnership by KL Rahul (49) and Suryakumar Yadav (40) for the fourth wicket. However, KL Rahul got run-out at 49, Suryakumar Yadav went on to score a half-century before he was caught at 64 runs off 83 balls. The next batsmen on the crease contributed their share to post a total of 237 runs with nine wickets lost in 50 overs.
Chasing the 238 runs target, Nicholas Pooran-led West Indies team were bowled out for 193 runs in 46 overs, falling short of 44 runs. Shamarh Brooks was the top-scoring batsman of West Indies at 44 runs off 64 balls followed by Akeal Hosein at 34 (52), Shai Hope at 27 (54) and Odean Smith at 24 (20), with others scoring less than 20 runs for their team. The Indian bowling side had dominated the innings by Prasidh Krishna taking a four-wicket haul and Shardul Thakur taking two wickets. Deepak Hooda too took his maiden international wicket in the innings and Mohammed Siraj, Yuzvendra Chahal and Washington Sundar bagged one wicket each.
Prasidh Krishna won the player of the match award for his four-wicket stint for 12 runs. The Rohit Sharma-led Indian team will now face West Indies in their third and final ODI match on Friday, February, 11 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Although, India has won the series the men in blue will now set their eye on a clean sweep in the tri – ODI series.
