Pakistan appointed its first female Supreme Court Judge on Monday, after a nomination process that proved contentious. Justice Ayesha Malik, 55 years, was selected by a commission that decided the promotion of the Judges.
She swore in on live TV, with her oath administered by Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmad. The Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan took to Twitter to congratulate Justice Ayesha Malik.
“I congratulate Justice Ayesha Malik for becoming the first female judge of the Supreme Court. She has my prayers and good wishes.”
The nine members of the board confirmed her appointment but had denied her promotion in the previous year. Some lawyers’ groups denying her promotion mentioned that she was not one of the top three senior judges of the court. And despite that, the court chose her. They have called for objective criteria for the promotion of judges.
May Her Ladyship rise to become CJP.
