81-Year-Old To Participate At BSafal Marathon In Ahmedabad

| Updated: January 6, 2025 15:20

Former state police official is set to participate in the BSafal Marathon in Ahmedabad on January 12, marking his 100th marathon event.

Chauhan, 81, who took up running at the age of 67, has become an inspiring figure, challenging the conventional idea that age limits physical activity. His achievement not only highlights his dedication but also serves as a powerful example of how fitness can enhance health and vitality, regardless of age.

Having lived in the United States for nearly 50 years, Chauhan is a strong advocate for running, believing it to be a key asset for both body and mind. He has participated in 54 marathons of 42 km, 12 ultra-marathons (greater than 42 km) and 33 half-marathons (21 km to 41 km), completing races in global cities like Berlin, Paris, Toronto, Chicago, Los Angeles and more. Chauhan is also looking forward to joining the Mumbai Marathon later this year before retiring from competitive running.

“As the city of Ahmedabad witnessed the beginning of my journey, it only feels right to complete this milestone here,” Chauhan shared. He has also been involved in marathons across India, including events in Mumbai, Shimla, Puducherry, Hyderabad and Chandigarh.

Chauhan’s career in the police force began in 1967 when he joined the state police in the erstwhile Bombay state, following in the footsteps of his father, A.N. Chauhan, who served in the police force. In 1976, Chauhan moved to the US after being sponsored by a friend. There, he developed an interest in marathons and took up stationary jogging to stay fit.

In 2009, Chauhan began his marathon journey in the US, ultimately running his first official race in January 2010. He transformed his lifestyle, reducing his weight from 89 kg to 71 kg to meet the demands of long-distance running. Running has since become an integral part of his life for the past 15 years.

Chauhan’s experiences during his 99 marathons are filled with remarkable memories of perseverance and camaraderie. He recalls an incident during a train journey from Washington DC to Chicago, where the train was 16 hours delayed, risking his ability to collect his race bibs. However, the railway authorities cooperated and ensured he could still participate.

In Hawaii, Chauhan faced severe cramps during a race that could have led to his first “Did Not Finish” (DNF) result. Thanks to a volunteer offering him pickle juice, the cramps subsided and he went on to finish in second place. Another memorable moment occurred in Richmond, Virginia, when two locals drove Chauhan to the stadium after he lost his way.

Chauhan attributes much of his humility to the marathoners he has met along the way, many of whom have completed more races than he has. His journey serves as a testament to the power of persistence and the ability to overcome obstacles, inspiring athletes of all ages to chase their goals.
