Authorities in Pune have intervened after nearly 300 cats were found in a residential apartment at Marvel Bounty Society. The municipal corporation took action following complaints from neighbours, citing concerns over hygiene and animal welfare.
The flat owner, who used to feed the cats to improve their health, released them back into society after they got well. However, this led to unhygienic conditions in the society resulting in a complaint by the neighbours, expressing their distress.
Inspector Nilesh Jagdale said, “The owner of an apartment in Marvel Bounty Society would often bring stray cats home and release them when the cats became healthy… Due to this, many cats had accumulated in the apartment, creating unhygienic conditions, which disturbed the neighbours.”
“The owner of a flat on the 9th floor has kept several cats in that flat, resulting in foul smells in the society. After the complaint, a team visited the flat and served notice to shift the cats,” he added.
A notice was given to the owner, instructing them to release the cats within two days.
“The neighbours contacted the Municipal Corporation, and its officials conducted a survey of the flats. The owner was informed that all the cats must be released within two days,” he informed.
He also mentioned that no formal case has been registered yet and they have consulted senior officials and the corporation to determine potential legal action. The cats will be taken into the Municipal Corporation’s custody for rescue.
