In 18 editions, there have been several memorable games, but few have gone on to become the biggest upsets in the history of the game and are still remembered by many. These upsets were not only close matches but had many emotions attached to them. Fans tracking Live Cricket Scores during these games witnessed history unfold.
1.Kochi Tuskers Kerala stun Mumbai Indians in 2011
Defunct franchise, Kochi Tuskers Kerala, were written off before the match even began. Facing the mighty Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede, few expected the new franchise to put up a fight. MI skipper, Sachin Tendulkar, smashed his first and only IPL century, and Ambati Rayudu chipped in with a fifty to post a target of 183. What looked like a done deal became a surprise to many as the match progressed. Brendon McCullum’s brilliant 81 and Mahela Jayawardene’s 56 helped the underdogs chase down the target with an over to spare. While MI fans were disappointed, IPL remains unpredictable, much like the race for the IPL Orange Cap each season.
2.Pune Warriors shock CSK at Chepauk in 2013
Beating Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk is still a dream for many franchises, but the Pune Warriors (defunct team) did the unthinkable. Aaron Finch led the Pune side from the front with a quickfire 67, and Steven Smith’s late cameo of a 16-ball 39* helped Pune reach 159/5 in their allotted 20 overs. MS Dhoni and his men never looked stable in the chase. Bhuvneshwar Kumar struck early, Ashok Dinda and Mitchell Marsh chipped in, as CSK kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Despite a brief cameo from Badrinath and Ravindra Jadeja, Pune’s bowlers held their nerve to seal a 24-run victory.
3. Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s one-run win over CSK in 2019
Coming from two wins in nine games, RCB were on the brink of another loss, and this time at the hands of the arch-rivals, CSK. The game began with RCB posting 161, thanks to Parthiv Patel’s 53 and a few knocks from the middle-order batters. However, Dale Steyn and Umesh Yadav’s early impact with the ball saw CSK struggling at 28/4. The CSK skipper, MS Dhoni came in for the rescue by scoring an unbeaten 84 off 48 balls, including 24 in the final over. With two needed off the last ball, it looked like another Dhoni miracle, but Umesh bowled a slower one, which the CSK skipper missed, and Parthiv Patel ran out Shardul Thakur to seal a narrow one-run win.
