Three labourers identified as Mitesh Manmohan, Sandip Ramvruksh, and Ramnaresh Bipat died at an industrial unit in Changodar on the outskirts of Ahmedabad yesterday. The deceased labourers were lowered into a tank at an oil recycling factory in order to clean it. They were allegedly asphyxiated to death.
It would appear prima facie that adequate safety precautions were not put in place.
The police control room received a message about the incident and the police registered a case and started investigating the case. Police said, “We have taken samples from the tank and sent them to be analysed for the presence of chemicals.”
The death of labourers at industrial sites is a recurring phenomenon. Every year around four dozen labourers lose their lives due to negligent or inadequate safety norms. At least 6,500 employees have died on duty at factories, ports, mines and construction sites in five years, the Union labour ministry informed the Parliament last year.
