An earthquake of 3.4 magnitude was recorded in Gujarat’s Kutch district early on Sunday morning, according to the Institute of Seismological Research (ISR). No injuries or property damage have been reported following the tremor, officials confirmed.
The tremor was detected at 3:58 am, with its epicentre located approximately 53 kilometres north-northeast of Lakhpat, as stated by the ISR, based in Gandhinagar.
This minor quake follows a recent tremor on October 27 in Amreli district, located in Gujarat’s Saurashtra region, where a 3.7 magnitude quake was registered, ISR data shows.
Gujarat is considered a high-risk zone for seismic activity. Over the past 200 years, the state has experienced nine major earthquakes, according to information from the Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA). Among these, the 2001 Kutch earthquake remains one of the most significant, ranking as the third largest and second most destructive earthquake in India over the last two centuries.
On January 26, 2001, a 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck Gujarat, with its epicentre near Bhachau in the Kutch district. This devastating event impacted the entire state, resulting in nearly 13,800 deaths and injuring an estimated 167,000 people, as recorded by the GSDMA.
