A major development near the Narendra Modi Stadium at Motera signifies the intense preparations for the 2036 Olympic Games. According to a news report, roughly 650 acres of land, home to three ashrams—including the controversial Sant Shree Asaram Ashram—will be acquired for the creation of the Sardar Patel Sports Enclave, Olympic Village, and state-of-the-art sports facilities.
Sant Shree Asaram Ashram, Bhartiya Seva Samaj, and Sadashiv Pragya Mandal, will be relocated to start this project. Shivnagar and Vanzara Vaas, residential localities around the stadium, and land from the Karai Police Academy are also part of the plan.
For the uninitiated, Asaram Bapu, a self-styled spiritual guru, once owned over 400 ashrams across the country, despite a track record of several criminal cases against him, including charges of sexual assault. Fear and violence have reportedly been his hallmark, and he has been linked to illegal land allegations. His daughter Bhartishree has been running his empire.
It has emerged that a body comprising the Ahmedabad municipal commissioner, Ahmedabad district collector, and Auda CEO has started the land acquisition process. They are working on providing alternative sites for the affected trusts.
Populous, an international consultancy agency, is reportedly making the plan for the Sardar Patel Sports Enclave and Olympic Village, the report claimed, attributing it to AUDA sources. The plan, totalling 650 acres, includes 600 acres in Bhat, Motera, Koteshwar, and Sughad, along with 50 acres on the Sabarmati Riverfront.
The consultant agency has integrated land from Phase 2 of the Sabarmati Riverfront into the development blueprint. The Sardar Patel Sports Enclave will span 280 acres around the Narendra Modi Stadium, with an additional 50 acres along the riverfront. Meanwhile, the Olympic Village will be situated on 240 acres in Bhat and Sughad, with further sports facilities planned for the Karai Academy land.
