Sabarmati Station: The Emerging Epicenter of Multimodal Transit
The Ahmedabad-Mumbai bullet train project, managed by the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), made significant strides in 2023. The multimodal transit hub at Sabarmati station is nearing completion, and work has begun on the first 7km of the undersea rail passage. A 350m mountain tunnel near Zaroli village in Valsad district was completed within 10 months.
The first reinforced concrete track bed for the bullet train corridor, similar to Japan’s Shinkansen rail network, has been laid in Surat and Anand, marking the first use of the ‘J-slab ballast-less’ track system in India.
Work has been completed over six of the 24 rivers on the route, and nearly 99.95% of the total land for the project has been acquired. All civil contracts for the project have been awarded by NHSRCL this year. Construction is underway at eight stations in Gujarat — Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Anand, Vadodara, Ahmedabad, and Sabarmati.
The project, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japan’s former prime minister Shinzo Abe in 2017, covers 508km, including 352km in Gujarat and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and 156km in Maharashtra.
