A total of 20,000 first-year seats in Gujarat University-affiliated colleges’ BCom, BBA and BCA programmes are still open after three rounds of centralised online admissions. Due to this, the university has decided to let colleges handle the admissions process independently.
There are over 41,000 seats available at the university in more than 80 associated colleges. The university received a total of 39,000 applications for admission. Approximately 16,000 students confirmed their enrollment after the first round by paying the costs. However, sources in the admissions committee reported GU had allocated places to 19,877 applicants during the last round of admission. But merely 4,700 showed up and paid fees.
After six rounds of admissions by the institution, almost 4,800 places in these courses remained unfilled in the previous academic year. The massive promotion of students as a Covid-19 alleviation tactic may have contributed to the significantly higher number of seats filled. This year, the university has requested the institutions to conduct their admissions after three rounds of online centralised admissions.
The deadline for colleges to finish the procedure and release their merit lists is August 24. On August 22, the decentralised admissions procedure will start.
The decentralised admissions procedure will not be open to students who have already paid their fees. Academicians criticised this, claiming that it would limit the chances of students who performed well on the board exams and received early admission.
