As the cost of education continues to increase, more parents find themselves unable to afford private schools for their children. During the academic session 2024-25, a staggering 2,29,747 students, spanning from Balvatika (pre-primary) to Class 12, have transitioned from private schools to government institutions across Gujarat.
According to data recently released by the state government, among the municipal corporations, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) takes the lead, with enrollment of 37,786 students who made the switch from private to government schools. Following closely are Surat Municipal Corporation (22,892 students), Vadodara Municipal Corporation (10,602 students) and Rajkot Municipal Corporation (6,204 students).
Across districts, Banaskantha district witnessed the highest influx, with 10,228 students opting for government schools. Mehsana (8,267 students), Bhavnagar (8,242 students), Junagadh (7,892 students) and Anand (7,269 students) also experienced substantial shifts. Ahmedabad Rural, Rajkot, Gandhinagar, Kutch, Kheda and Surat districts collectively contributed to this educational transformation.
A total of Rs 55,114 crore has been earmarked for the education sector, representing an increase of Rs 11,463 crore compared to the previous year’s budget provision (2023-24).
According to the state government, over one lakh smart classes are operational, providing students with a modern and interactive educational experience. Additionally, more than 5,000 smart classes are in progress, further enhancing technological access. The distribution of 240,000 computers across 16,000 schools is already underway, with plans to provide an additional 70,000 computers to over 4,000 schools, the state government claimed.
