The Gujarat High Court has taken suo motu cognisance of a shocking incident where 17 people lost their vision after undergoing cataract surgery at a trust-run hospital in Ahmedabad. The court has asked the state government to submit a report on the matter by February 7.
According to a report by the Local News, a bench of Justices AS Supehia and VK Vyas termed the incident as “glaring and deplorable” and issued notices to the health department secretary and the Ahmedabad Rural SP.
The report said that the 17 patients were operated on between January 1 and 10 at Ramanand Eye Hospital, run by the Shree Seva Niketan Trust in Mandal block of Ahmedabad district. They were later admitted to another hospital with “severe postoperative complications, hospital-acquired infections after cataract surgeries”.
The bench observed that the state authorities had not filed any criminal complaint against the erring medical staff who were responsible for the mishap. The bench said that the incident needed a thorough and sincere investigation to fix the liability of the culprits and to pay adequate compensation to the victims who had lost their eyesight.
The bench also sought to know if any substandard drug was used during the surgery or if there was any lack of facility or maintenance of medical protocols that were required for any eye surgery.
