The Lok Sabha was informed on Tuesday that there were 1,64,033 suicides in India in 2021, with as many as 115 wage earners and 63 housewives taking their own lives per day.
Nityanand Rai, the Union Minister of State for Home, shared statistics from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) stating that a total of 23,179 housewives and 42,004 daily wage employees committed suicide last year.
In a written response, he stated that last year saw the suicides of 20,231 self-employed people, 15,870 salaried individuals, 13,714 jobless individuals, 13,089 students, 12,055 business owners, and 11,431 owners of private sector firms.
In 2021, according to Mr Rai, there were 10,881 people working in agriculture, 5,563 agricultural labourers, 5,318 farmers or cultivators, 4,806 people who used to cultivate their own land with or without the help of agricultural labourers, and 512 people who used to cultivate on leased land or work on leased or on other people’s land with or without the help of agricultural labourers committed suicide as well.
